Visit students Rijnlands Lyceum Oegstgeest to REAP 16 November 2016

Wednesday morning 16 November 2015   we were going to REAP,  Our guide led us through the slums, and to the little schools where we were going to teach the children a couple of games. The games we played were: Simon says, Saturday, I spy with my eye and we taught them the song ‘head shoulders knees and toes’. Which was all a lot of fun! The children were really sweet and polite.
They called us teacher, and they were very eager to learn new stuff. I really wanted to take all the children with me back to the Netherlands and send them to an actual school where they could learn, study and have a chance to a better future. But unfortunately I couldn’t do much about it, except for making the most out of that day and of course we did help them a little bit, by raising the money for REAP. Together we raised 2.005 euros! The money will be spent on educational stuff. Like books, lunch and other lesson material. So we went to the establishment where we personally handed the money to the organisation.
The children in the slum schools were so eager to learn new things and they seemed to be happy with even the little they had. I was glad we have donated the money, but I still have a feeling that I need to do more, because these people also need to get a chance to make something out of their lives.s

Report  By Kiora Russel, Sophia van Megen and Joppe van Hoeve
At the schools we saw classes of children from the slums who enjoyed the learning and schoolwork and were very enthusiastic when singing us songs or telling about their dreams. This was very inspiring.
After we stayed at these classes for a while, the whole group gathered at the school where we went apart just before. While waiting for everyone to arrive, we played a game of football with some of the children that were around. When we asked for a ball, they first brought a tennis ball and later an old, flat basketball. With this limited equipment we played a very fun game of football, and the children enjoyed it. After that, we went the same way down through the slums to get into the bus, because we would continue to another slum for the REAP centre.

Sometime later we arrived in a class room of REAP (Reach Education Action Programme). We all listened  to the main goal of REAP told by one of the founders. The main thing reap is about is to help the children out of the slums to start a school career. Of course they can’t help everyone they see, so they pick the ones who will never be able to get out of the slums without their help and they pick the ones who want to do everything for it. They don’t want to put too many children in a classroom so in most classes is a maximum of 20 students a class. Currently REAP helps approximately 5 thousand children of the slums. Of course they can’t do this without some financial help, so if you have money spare and you don’t know on what to spend it maybe you can something good.
